Great Britain, Netherlands and Croatia are the first countries to vote for the new members of the European Parliament.
The voting process for the 28 member countries of the EU for the election of 751 members will last until Sunday as the elections will be held on different days.
Apart from the three countries that will vote today, Malta, Ireland and Czech Republic will vote on Friday, May 23 in two phases, Cyprus, Slovakia and Latvia on Friday May 23, Italy on Saturday May 24 and Greece and all other European countries on Sunday, May 25.
It should also be noted that the official results will not be announced before Sunday midnight, as the voting process should first end in all poll centres across Europe.
400 million people will be asked to vote, but according to the latest opinion polls abstention is expected to be very high, since most voters are not interested in the procedure.
Regarding the preferences of European people, the European People’s Party seems to get the first place, while Socialists come second. It is striking that the nationalist parties show a significant rise in several countries. In France, Marine Le Pen with the National Front comes first according to opinion polls, while Nigel Farage has great chances to win in Great Britain and Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. As analysts say this trend is due to the lack of interest that European citizens show.
