SYRIZA President Alexis Tsipras asked for national elections as soon as possible, speaking on Sunday night from his party’s headquarters.
Expressing his confidence that SYRIZA will be the next government, Tsipras described today as historic, for the people, noting that for the first time in the country’s history “the Left was the greatest power, by far”.
“We have a major upset in the largest electorate region of the country”, he said, assuming, obviously, that the Attica Regional election would result in Rena Dourou’s victory “and a number of municipalities across Greece”, and added that tomorrow “all of Europe will be talking about SYRIZA”.
“Everyone knows that this effect is primarily a victory for the people, because we have rallied broader powers to combat the memorandum”, he said, welcoming “the great step made by citizens, who defied extortion”.
“The people gave us an ultimatum to hurry and respond to the pressing request on the formation of a coalition which will win the next elections and will become the new, ultimate majority”, he added and underlined “The people ask us to coordinate all Leftist forces, with an aim to be victorious in the upcoming national elections”.
“SYRIZA has already called for national elections, after having found a mismatch of the government’s policies with its programmatic announcements. We do not intend to step down from this request”.
Alexis Tsipras’ office Director, Mr. Nikos Pappas, made this statement on Alpha TV channel, clearly defining the way that SYRIZA will follow on the day after the elections.
Mr. Nikos Pappas stated he is excited on the result that brings SYRIZA ahead of the New Democracy, subject to confirmation of the exit polls, by the final elections results.
The important thing for SYRIZA’s leadership is that the electoral performance of the party is greater than the 27% of 2012. Which creates a completely different political dynamic, in accordance with the expectations of most people.
Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA, Nikos Voutsis, stated that this is the first time since the fall of the Junta in 1974, that the left is first in nation-wide elections. He underlined that there is a significant possibility that a page has been turned, but refrained from making any further estimates, waiting for the progress of results.
