“I don’t care what people say. I am not on my knees before any leader. I won the elections.”
The above statement was made by Jean – Claude Juncker, candidate of the European People ‘s Party for President of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, following EPP’s victory in the European elections. Juncker also posted a relevant announcement on Twitter.
Juncker ‘s statements were most probably addressed to British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is understood to have expressed reservations about Juncker’s candidacy, on the grounds that he considers the former prime minister of Luxembourg ‘too federalist’ for the presidency of the European Commission.
Juncker said that, as the winner of yesterday’s elections, he is the first in line to claim the presidency of the European Commission, stressing that the double-digit difference in seats gained by the EPP and the European Socialist Party entitles him to try first to build a majority in the EU assembly.
EPP candidate also said that the far right and populists did not win the elections, although their success in some countries is very alarming.
It should be noted that, following nomination by EU leaders, a successful candidate will need the support of at least 376 deputies in the 751-member Parliament.
Leaders of the Parliament’s political groups will meet on Tuesday morning to begin the process of allowing a candidate to build a majority in the EU assembly. The leaders will then gather on Tuesday evening to have their first discussions following the elections, led by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.
