Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is planning his next steps after the outcome of European elections.
The Prime Minister will go to Brussels today to attend the dinner of EU leaders and on Thursday he will meet the President of Hellenic Republic and his government ‘s partner Mr Evangelos Venizelos. Yesterday the Prime Minister met with Kostis Chatzidakis who informed him about the new NSRF program and at the afternoon Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournara informed him about the reactions of market, indicating that he will again give priority to economy.
Among the recommendations the Prime Minister receives is government reshuffling during June while at the same time he will increase his majority in parliament. To achieve this the government might approach independent MPs in order to include them in the next government scheme or even members of the Independent Greeks or Democratic Left who might experience intraparty discontent after the bad results they had during the elections. Increasing the parliamentary majority will also help government to confront the challenging bills that has to implement. Several of these are commitments made due to memorandum signed and will test the strength of the government’s scheme.
What the Prime Minister rejects without even discussing it is the demand of Mr.Tsipras for early elections. Antonis Samaras during his visit to the President Papoulias will show that the outcome of elections ensure government stability and smooth development of the country.
The relationship of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his party, New Democracy, with PASOK is a separate topic raised in the post-election period. Even though Mr Venizelos lost 30% of its electoral strength, he feels that his party strength is enhanced by the result.
New Democracy now fears that Mr Venizelos will have requirements and demands both in terms of the government reshuffling and for the policy that will be followed.
