The frustration among the members of New Democracy is noticeable regarding the defeat they suffered and the difference of four percentage points. They lay the blame on the environment of Prime Minister accusing them on wrong tactics and wrong political choices in local elections.
The climate within the Government and New Democracy became worse yesterday because of the leaking to the media of the frustration of Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras who stated, according to information, that “he will not become the bag boxing”, since many members of New Democracy consider him responsible for the defeat of their party, announcing that he would withdraw from the government.
Indicative of the bad climate that prevails within New Democracy is the statement of former Minister Mr Maximus Charakopoulos who asked to assess the outcome of the elections on party members and talked directly about “bad results as a consequence of errors and inappropriate choices”.
Many members of New Democracy like Mr Charakopoulos seek reviewing of the economic policy since the continuation of the same course will lead to further decrease of their supporters. However, European partners have told Mr Samaras that the change of economic policy and reforms is out of question. In this context, Mr Samaras has limited chances to turn things over. But while he cannot make any moves regarding the economic policy, he can shuffle the political deck proceeding to government reshuffle and increase of the parliamentary majority.
Any political move, though, have to be confirmed by his government partner Mr Evangelos Venizelos who behaves as the winner of the elections and claims a larger share in the exercise of power starting from the reshuffle. According to information, he wants eight ministries and puts a veto on persons who must go or come causing great discontent within New Democracy.
