As it was announced on Monday, the Clock Tower landmark in the city of Xanthi, northeast Greece, was unanimously declared a monument by the Central Council of Modern Monuments.

The tower situated in Dimokratia Square, in the centre of the town, was built in 1859 by nobleman Haci Emin Aga and was part of the city’s central mosque, known as the “Market Mosque” that was destroyed by fire in 1941.

The decision to declare the tower a monument was based on the interesting architectural characteristics of the landmark that reflect the city’s architectural evolution.
