A deletion of Greek debt and actions oriented towards development were requested by Alexis Tsipras, towards ECB president Mario Draghi, during a meeting in Frankfurt on Tuesday evening.
Mr. Tsipras, reportedly spoke about the humanitarian crisis in Greece, referring to tax cases and expressed his disagreement with the former Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras’ placement as Governor of the Bank of Greece, stressing that for SYRIZA, the consultation on the selection of a Governor of the Bank is needed.
It should be noted, however, that so far there is no photo of the meeting of the two men, as was the case with the meeting between Alexis Tsipras and Wolfgang Schaeuble. The SYRIZA president’s embarrassment and awkwardness was evident upon entering the ECB building.
Speaking after the end of the meeting, which lasted about an hour, Alexis Tsipras considered that although the measures which were announced by the ECB last week are moving towards a positive direction, they will not be applicable in Greece, due to deflation and the poor condition of the banks, which as Mr. Tsipras stated “cannot give any guarantees”.
He also asked for courageous political decisions on a “new European deal”, which as he explained, would be a combination of actions by the ECB and the Investment Bank.
“Without a debt cancellation and a development clause, we will not be able to get out of the throes of the crisis”, concluded the SYRIZA president.
