The disagreement between Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Andreas Loverdos ended up with an amendment that would extend the layoff deadline of 341 university administrators, just 24 hours after the new members of the government have taken the oath.
According to the press office of the Ministry of Administrative Reform “this adjustment is considered necessary so as the new Minister of Education will have the chance to be informed and assess the data providing sufficient time to the interested parties to submit their applications after the publication of the statement,”.
The 341 university administrators are among the first employees of universities that were temporary laid off and now the deadline ends.
The disagreement between the two ministers concerned the number of employees who will be repositioned. Mr. Mitsotakis argued that 536 employees should be repositioned, whereas Mr. Loverdos raised the number to 800 employees.
The Minister of Administrative Reform emphasized the fact that the 15,000 redundancies program must be followed strictly as it was planned and if this fails to happen, other ministries will have to face more lay-offs.
On the other hand, Mr. Loverdos said that the smooth operation of the universities is at risk since in September universities will not be able to meet the requirements of the new academic year.
