75% of Baiji, the largest oil refinery in Iraq is now in Sunni militant hands, an unnamed official from inside the refinery told Reuters.
According to the news agency, the members of ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) had occupied the largest part of Baiji, in Northern Iraq. The same source notes that the conflicts between fanatical Islamists and Iraqi security forces continue to this hour.
According to the Arabic networks, Sunni militants have long coveted the town of Baiji, where the largest oil refinery in the country is located and where 300,000 barrels of oil are produced per day.
Apart from the refinery, Baiji is also the home of a large energy plant.
According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, dozens of workers have been abducted by the militants.
