The last Eurobarometer showed that 82% of Greeks perceive working conditions in their country to be bad, compared to the 43% average in the European Union of 28 countries. Greece has the highest rate of dissatisfaction noted and lags behind Hungary, Spain and Italy as far as working conditions aer concerned. 88% of Greeks believe that working conditions have worsened over the last five years with only 8% believing that conditions have remained the same. The high 26.6% documented unemployment (1.35 million people) are considered lucky but evey they have to deal with worsening conditions in their place of work.
Interventions to employment contracts have created a jungle with high demands and meager, if any, protection of workers rights. The leading role in the Greek economy are small and medium-sized enterprizes (SMEs) and these are the ones where the worst offences are noted against workers. Profiteering is rife with threats over whether payments will be made, insults and demands.
