The number of employees in public broadcasting group Radio Canada / CBC will be reduced by 20% by 2020, an increase from 1,000 to 1,500 workers, mainly through retirement workers who will not be replaced, as was announced today by the group CEO Mr. Eber Lakroua.
The head of Radio Canada / CBC appealed today to the staff in order to present the profound changes in strategy: fewer television programs and more Internet.
The Canadian public broadcast Group is under pressure because of state funding reduction, including the latest restructuring plan, which was to eliminate 657 jobs in April. The number of jobs that have been abolished in the last five years have reached the 2,000.
“We have estimated that in 2020 we will have from 1,000 to 1,500 fewer employees in the group of CBC / SRC” Mr. Lakroua said, in an internal memo to employees, a copy of which is in the possession of the AFP. After the recent restructuring, the number of employees in the Group amounted to 7,500.
Of this total, there are about 1,000 workers who will retire and not be replaced, he added.
In context of this strategic plan, the closure of offices and resell a portion of the premises of the group, will allow in a year, cost savings amounting to “about 100 million Canada dollars ” (75 million euro), he emphasized .
Finally, he added that “We are not talking about sacrifice, but about the renewal of the gate” of the Internet. He also said that in our days the world turns to information through computers and mobile devices, such as mobile and tablets.
