The white mini dress that 18-year-old Fiona Butler was wearing in 1976 when she was photographed by her boyfriend at the time Martin Elliot at the University of Birmingham was sold at a price much larger than expected at an auction held in Stourbridge, Britain.
Martin Elliott, who died in 2010, sold the image licence for the 1977 Athena poster, which sold more than 2 million copies.
The infamous poster shows the young woman from behind walking towards the net of a tennis court with a tennis racquet in her right hand and her left hand reaching behind lifting her short tennis dress, showing she is not wearing any underwear.
According to the auction organizers, the price of the dress, which was offered along with the tennis racquet featured in the image and two copies of the poster, was almost 8 times the initial £2,000 estimate.
