A train derailed in Moscow, Russia, killing at least ten people and injuring over 120 during their rush-hour commute with figures of victims still climbing. The train from the blue line derailed in between the Slaviansky Boulevard and Park Pobedy stations amid scenes of chaos in the most serious accident on the Moscow metro in recent years.

Television footage showed rescue workers and paramedics treating injured people whereas helicopters ferried away the most seriously hurt. News reports said that some people were believed to have been stranded underground. A spokesman for the emergencies ministry said that the accident happened when a train braked suddenly after a power surge caused the train to stall. There is no talk of foul play.

Several stations were closed temporarily as a result of the crash. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin rushed to the scene and promised swift aid for the victims. He announced that 65 buses would take to the streets as an alternative public transport.
