Praxitelis Tzanoulinos’ impressive sculpture representing a sphere surrounded by Olympic rings and laurel branches is to grace Gaia Park at the affluent Town of Mount Royal in Montreal. The steel globe is prominently placed at the edge of the Greek dominated Parc Extension.
The imposing sculpture that has a diameter of 1.4 meters and weighs 320 pounds is a gift from the Greek community to the city of Montreal in honor of the fact that the Olympic torch passed by the area twice. The Town of Mount Royal’s Mayor Philippe Roy unveiled the sculpture during a special ceremony. He stated that the choice of Gaia Park was not coincidental as it bears the Greek name symbolizing the Earth.
The Consul General of Greece in Montreal, Thanos Kafopoulos, thanked the municipality for accepting the sculpture and placing it at such a pretty location. He then went on to spotlight the four Greek families that were responsible for its construction: Paul and Melpa Kamateros, Nikolaos Tsatas, Nikolaos Arkolakis and Jimmy Christopoulos.
In her address, Melpa Kamateros, a former local municipal counselor said that with this act, the Greeks of Montreal are leaving their mark on the city and continuing their history there.
