A simple wine cup dating back to the 5th century BC acquires special value, if it turns out that this was Pericles’ wine cup, the great Greek politician who brought ancient Athens to the pinnacle of power, glory and fame. At least that’s what archaeologists support, of a wine cup found in an ancient tomb in Kifissia.
The black-glazed “skyphos”, as the name suggests, is almost certain to have been used by Pericles, while it is not impossible that it bears his own signature. As reported in the newspaper, the vessel of only eight centimeters was broken into 12 pieces in the tomb found in the foundations of a building under construction. When put together, the archaeologists were surprised to find out that six names in the genitive were written on top of it: Aristides, Diodotos, Desimos, Arrifron, Pericles and Efkritos.
The greatest legacy of Pericles is the Parthenon and the artwork of the Golden Age of Athens. Historian Paparrigopoulos argued that these projects alone are enough to ensure that Greece remains immortal within the whole world.
