The city of Pavlopetri ranked 1st among the most amazing underwater finds in history

It is the oldest submerged city in the world!

Ealuxe.com, a site that provides information about the most luxurious and finest experiences life has to offer, published recently a list of the most amazing underwater finds in history. 

Pavlopetri, the oldest submerged city in the world, was ranked first in this amazing list, which history buffs will love.

Located underwater off the coast of southern Laconia, in Peloponnese, Greece, the city of Pavlopetri is about 5.000 years old.

The city was originally dated to be Mycenaean period, meaning 1600-1100 B.C. Later studies showed the city dated no later than 2800 B.C.

This amazing relic is a part of the underwater cultural heritage, defined in the ‘UNESCO Convention of the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage’.

1. Pavlopetri

This amazing city was discovered in 1967 by Nicholas Flemming and mapped a year later by a team of archaeologists from Cambridge.

2. The Lost Mahabalipuram Pagodas
Also known as ‘Seven Pagodas’ the south Indian city of Mahabalipuram was discovered in 2004, during the Boxing Day tsunami, when the water receded by 500 meters, uncovering the pagodas.

3. Heracleion
Heracleion was an ancient city, near Alexandria, Egypt. The city’s ruins are located in Abu Qir Bay, 2.5 km off the coast.

4. Yonaguni Monument
The Yonaguni Monument is a gigantic underwater rock formation, located in Japan, off the coast of Yonaguni.

5. A Sphinx
This year, archaeologists discovered a sphinx off the coast of the Bahamas, which is believed that the amazing relic has been lying there for up to 2.500 years.

6. F-4 Fighter Jet
This rare, amazing F-4 Phantom fighter jet was found 130 feet underwater, in Subic Bay, Philippines.

7. The SS Mahrattas
The coast of Kent is no stranger to shipwrecks, as there are 1.000 recorded shipwrecks in the area. And 2 of them are the SS Mahrattas.

8. The Dornier 17

The Dornier 17 was a German bomber in World War II. It took part in the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. The Dornier 17 was shot down by Pilot Officer Desmond Hughes and his gunner Sergeant Fred Gash, during a raid.

9. Japan’s Record-Breaking Submarine
This submarine discovered in August 2013, underwater off the coast of Hawaii. Measuring 122 meters, the submarine was the world’s largest submarine at the time, with a range of 37.500 miles.

10. A Prehistoric Shark Tooth
While diving in Florida, off the coast of Venice Beach, a scuba diver found something that happened to be this terrifying tooth. The shark tooth was about 3 times longer and 4 times wider than other ‘regular’ shark’s tooth.
