The successors of the President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy and of Catherine Ashton the top of European diplomacy, the crisis in Ukraine and the Middle East and the economic situation of the EU are the main issues of the agenda of the Extraordinary European Council (Heads of State) which will take place in Brussels.
After the “28” to seek a balance between the Member States of the West and the East, the North and South of the EU, and between center-right and center-left politicians, the names that appear as favorites for both high positions in the EU are those of the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, the former Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Ntomprovskis and Danish Prime Minister Chele Torningk-Schmidt to the position of Herman van Rompuy and the Foreign Minister of Italy Federica Mogkerini as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
So far the most likely is Ntolant Tusk who already met in Brussels with both the outgoing President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and the next Jean – Claude Juncker as the President of Ukraine Petro Porosenko who was invited to the European Council.
The eventual choice of Donald Tusk, who is supported by London and Berlin will be a symbolic gesture to Poland which completes a decade of its accession to the EU, which wants to play an enhanced role in the Union and later Eurozone. The Polish Prime Minister has spoken openly even for the European course of Ukraine and has brought harsh criticism towards Vladimir Putin.
Within these settlements for the top positions of the EU the Finance Minister Luis de Spain Guinness appears as the favorite to succeed the Minister of Finance of the Netherlands Geroun Ntaiselmploum the chair of Eurogroup, although the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rute wishes to maintain the chair Conclave of the eurozone countries until 2015.
Meanwhile Jean – Claude Juncker expects the decisions of the “28” for the two positions of the EU before announcing the composition of the new Commission, which is expected to occur within the first two weeks of September and will need to take the approval by the European Parliament in October.
