ENFIA tax law to be voted today in the Parliament

The government wants to speed up the property tax payments

Newsroom September 11 09:37

The government will try to settle down the ENFIA issue today after two months arguing that Greek citizens should “pay the taxes now, so as to enjoy tax cuts afterwards,” and MPs are called to vote today the amended ENFIA law.

Speaking at the Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis seemed to share and justify the reactions and concerns of the MPs of the coalition government. However, there is no room for last minute changes, since Troika has already said its last word on the subject.

Mr. Hardouvelis presented yesterday the tax reductions included in the bill, stressing that 2,5 million taxpayers who would not have been entitled to a tax discount due to pending payments to tax offices, will now benefit from the discount.

However, there are still many open issues on which MPs put some pressure.

For example, based on the amendment that has been submitted, the ENFIA tax will be paid even by those who lost their home at property auctions due to debts to tax offices, because according to the law the tax property concerns properties of 2013.

Moreover, a family with a low income, owing an apartment of 80 square metres and a 1400 cc car which is ten years old, is not entitled to any tax reduction.
