Greek conservative New Democracy Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is viewing the Coalition of the Left SYRIZA party as a real threat with a number of strategic clashes sending both parties on a collision course. Mr. Samaras has signaled the warning siren concerning the threat that the opposition poses, whereas the main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has accused the prime minister of using “scaremongering” tactics and spreading “panic”.
The government maintains that SYRIZA in government would herald a negative climate in the European Union, rendering all sacrifices made by the Greek people over the last few years as futile. His tone is expected to escalate during events commemorating the 40-year-anniversary of the New Demcracy Party. The first will be at Halkidiki, Northern Greece, on September 27, and the second on October 4 in Athens.
