Cyprus: Massive tax evasion by Greek actors and singers

Greek singer collected 50.000 euro for just two performances – he also demanded another 15.000 for a next of kin escort of his

Newsroom October 5 03:31

Cypriot General Financial Inspector, Mr. Odyseas Mihailidis has ‘’nailed’’ Greek artists who perform ‘’hit and run’’ style in Cyprus without declaring their huge payments.

In an interview in ‘’Politis’’ Cypriot newspaper, Mr. Mihailidis reveals that this year’s financial inspection were focused on Greek artists who visit the island on a variety of events, such as single concerts, TV series appearances, or theatrical shows. Most of them collect considerable amounts of money which remain undeclared to the Cypriot Tax authorities. What is more, following the evidence gathered by the Cypriots and the corresponding tax authorities in Greece, these amounts of money have also remained in hiding in Greece as well.

According to the Cypriot newspaper, a famous Greek singer received 50 thousand euro as a reward for just a couple of live performances, while demanding yet another 15 thousand for a relative of his. This demand was made though all the travelling and food expenses were totally covered in the first place.

Tax evasion incidents seem to also take place in case of artists who participate in charitable organizations’ concerts and various functions.

The presence of Greek artists has progressively intensified over the last years, both in the Cypriot TV and in Cypriot political parties’ functions.

All the evidence accumulated by the Cypriot Financial Inspector will be included in his final report, soon to be delivered to the Cabinet of the Cypriot government.
