Wednesday’s blood moon has grabbed the attention of astronomers and photographers alike because the lunar eclipse will produce a spectacular blood moon effect that will last for a full hour.

The phenomenon begins just after the sun fully sets when a shadow appears on the moon before it starts turning red. The depth of the color will depend on the dust particles and cloudiness at the time. The bloody appearance is the result of the refraction of the sun’s light through the Earth’s atmosphere on the moon.

The full lunar eclipse is due to the passage of the Earth directly between the sun and the moon, forming an aligned line known as a “syzygy”.
