Former French first lady in pub brawl with ex-friend

The two Valeries put an end to a 20-year friendship with a catfight that involved scratching and hair-pulling

Newsroom October 11 04:37

Valerie Trierweiler, the former first lady of France, physically attacked Valerie de Senneville, an ex-friend because she felt betrayed when she saw Ms. de Senneville chatting to her former husband’s friends in a Paris bar known as the Banana Cafe. The guests at the private party watched on as a catfight ensued between the two grown women with scratching and hair pulling. The party was organized by another mutual friend, politician Jean-Luc Romero, on the occasion of this wedding anniversary.

Ms. Trierweler has not been nicknamed “the Rottweiler” for nothing and so she pounced on Ms. de Senneville who – according to Ms. Trierweler – should have known better than to have spoken to the friends of the man who had dumped his wife for actress Julie Gayet last year.

French magazine France-Dimanche reported that the former first lady scratched with one hand and pulled her friend’s hair with the other. The guests watched the two Valeries fight before managing to finally break up the fight.

Ms. de Senneville decided not to bring legal action for the assault against her. The catfight was a low point in the 20-year friendship of the women who had met when they were both starting out as political journalists in Paris. They had similar paths, Ms. Trierweler beside Mr. Hollande and Ms. de Senneville as the wife of Socialist party activist Michel Sapin. Ms. de Senneville had consoled her friend when the affair had been revealed.

Learning of the affair, Ms. Trierweler had flown into such a rage that she caused 2.5-million pounds worth of damage to Mr. Hollande’s office.

It’s reactions like this that have allowed French satirists to have a field day.
