The leader of the main opposition party SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, will meet today the leader of Independent Greeks, Panos Kamenos. The main issue of the discussion is expected to be their refusal to vote at the next elections for the President of Hellenic Republic.
This meeting is crucial regarding the outcome of the major political competition in February.
If Mr. Kamenos insists on the early elections, it is unlikely or impossible for the coalition government to find the 180 votes required to elect the President of Hellenic Republic.
However, if Independent Greeks change their opinion and support the election of the President of Hellenic Republic, then it is possible that the next President will be elected and thus no elections will be conducted.
Given the fact that the Communist Party of Greece, Democratic Left, at least 6 independent MPs, and the Golden Dawn, (about 114 MPs in total) are against the election of the next President, it is clear that Independent Greeks position is crucial.
