Energy Minister Yiannis Maniatis visited the United States to present Greece’s policy and initiatives in the energy sector. He met with U.S. Secretary of Energy, Dr. Ernest Moniz, the Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Catherine Novelli and Michelle Patron, U.S. President Barack Obama’s special adviser and director on Energy and Climate at the National Security Council (NSC).
During his visit he underlined the significance in developing natural gas transit projects from new gas production aimed at further promoting the strategic target and boosting European and East Balkan energy security.
He also presented his U.S. counterparts with a detailed description of hydrocarbon exploration being carried out in the Ionian Sea, the south of Crete and western Greece. Meetings also focused on the current geopolitical developments in the east Mediterranean while officials exchanged views on Greece’s systematic and effective efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
The Greek and U.S. views were aligned with both men agreeing that there was a “common approach” on the energy sector. The U.S. gave Greece its support and the two ministers agreed to hold a future meeting.
Mr. Maniatis also met with executives of major oil companies at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to discuss concessions for hydrocarbon exploration.
The visit continues on Wednesday with Mr. Maniatis’ address at the University of Columbia, titled “The Eastern Mediterranean and European Energy Landscape: Trends and Opportunities”. He will also meet with entrepreneurs and academics.
