The coalition government is seeking to find a solution for 21-year-old jailed anarchist Nikos Romanos to study that would still be in adherance to the law. The matter is of urgency as Mr. Romanos is on the 30th day of a hunger strike he started on November 10 after his application to attend his course at a Technical Education Institute was rejected. Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou on Monday said the jailed anarchist could wear an electronic monitoring wrist bracelet.
Draft legislation that would allow for this measure has been approved but needs to go into effect. Earlier, the young man’s lawyer, Frangiskos Ragousis, said that the measure could be accepted by his client. Until now, Mr. Romanos has rejected correspondence learning as he wants to be able to attend the lectures in person. Mr. Ragousis guaranteed that his client wants to study, not escape.
Mr. Athanasiou urged Mr. Romanos’ parents to convince their son to follow his course through correspondence until the measure is implemented. The draft legislation is being discussed in Parliament on Tuesday.
George Romanos, the young man’s father, met with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Monday, however there had been no breakthrough in the situation as Mr. Samaras said that he could not intervene and made no commitments. Opposition Coalition of the Left SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, who also met with Mr. Romanos, said that the young man’s life is in danger. “Now that there is huge danger for the life of a young person, who is seeking the right to an education, nobody has the right to behave like Pontius Pilate,” he said.
