With the Prime Minister’s decision to proceed on President of the Republic elections on the 17th of December, the government wishes to reduce political uncertainty and to increase its chances to win both the election of the President of the Republic and the posible early national elections, stresses Citi.
Further, Citi indicates that Mr. Antonis Samaras by separating the voting of the presidential elections from the negotiations for the ongoing review and monitoring compliance with the memorandum, increases the chances to obtain the votes needed to avoid generalized elections, since an agreement with lenders is likely to include additional unpopular budget cuts and structural reforms.
Finally. Citi stresses that in case of early national elections, the left party of SYRIZA may be forced to take a clear position on the continuation of the rescue program, which has so far rejected.
