Veteran Greek journalist Serapheim Fydanidis died suddenly on Christmas night at the age of 77 years. Sources close to the journalist say he had entered a private hospital in Athens for a heart bypass just a few days earlier, however complications arose that required his immediate transfer to the Ippokrateio Hospital of Greece.
Mr. Fydanidis was born in the Peristeri region of Athens in March 1937. A high-trained economist, he worked at Ethnos newspaper from 1957-1968. During Greece’s dictatorship he was the lead editor at Apogevmatini newspaper from 1968-1974, before moving on to Acropolis newspaper from 1974-1976.
The newspaper, however, with which his name has been linked with the most is Eleftherotypia. He was at the helm from June 1976 through to April 27, 2007, propelling the newspaper to great popularity with groundbreaking stories.
Apart from his work in the press and on television, he wrote the book “31 Unforgettable Years” that gives the behind-the-scenes lowdown into Greek journalism and the behind-the-scenes wrangling that goes on.
Mr. Fyntanidis’ funeral is being held at the First Cemetary of Athens at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
