A serious incident occurred in the morning of Monday on Attiki Odos motorway near Eleftherios Venizelos airport, when a Smart car exploded in motion at around 07:30 am.

Police rushed to the spot and extricated two people, a man and a woman, who were subsequently taken to the hospital. The man reportedly died en route while the woman, a 26-year-old Albanian national, is treated at Genimmatas Hospital for severe burns.

According to preliminary information the car was laden with explosives. However, the target of the attack has not been determined yet.

Fire fighters arrived immediately at the scene of the explosion and extinguished the fire. It should also be noted that police have cordoned off the area, due to the scattered debris on the road from the explosion.
