Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis said in an interview on Sunday’s issue of To Vima newspaper that bank accounts are safe. He has legislated deposit safeguards in the event of a shakeup ahead of Monday’s parliamentary election for Greek president.
“We are preparing to withstand any rolling and pitching,” he said, ahead of the third and last round of presidential elections on Monday. Failure to elect a president will result in early national elections that could send the Greek economy spiraling out of control. “We have already passed laws safeguarding bank deposits and are in constant touch with our EU fellow-members while the whole government will be on alert and vigilant.”
Initiatives had been taken to keep bank deposits safe and the government has legislated the option of the hellenic Financial Stability Fund to lend money to the Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund if it needs greater reserves than those available to support depositors.
Mr. Hardouvelis said that the “next stage” will be based on a growth plan without coercian by the troika of Greece’s international creditors from the European Commission (EC), European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He also pointed to another option should a Greek president not be selected in the third round of elections, driving the country to early elections. “The key to avoid tossing and turning and our economy’s future in 2014 and beyond is held by the European Central Bank,” he said, considering the scenario where a government hostile to the bailout program is elected. “This key can easily and abruptly be used to block funding to banks and therefore strangle the Greek economy in no time at all,” he said.
