Greek lawmakers failed to elect Stavros Dimas as president of the Hellenic Republic in the third and final round. 168 deputies voted in favor of his candidacy and 132 MPs voted “present” as an indication that they did not support Mr. Dimas’ candidacy.
Following his failure to gather 180 votes required so that he could be elected as President, Mr. Dimas thanked ctizens and deputies and noted that Greece and the country’s political system is obliged to ensure that democratic procedures are followed.
The Constitution states that incumbent President Karolos Papoulias will remain in office until he is replaced. Within 10 days parliament will be dissolved and the country will have to call general elections.
