Greek defence forces are on alert after two attempted intrusions at camps where explosive devices are held. The latest intrusion was noted at the Malakassa army base at 12.20 a.m. shortly after midnight on Sunday when two unknown assailants tried to break the fence and enter into the barracks where arms are kept. Sources state that the barracks also contain various devices confiscated by the police during operations.
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias was briefed on the incident by Ηellenic National Defence General Staff General Michael Kostarakos, who said that alarm sirens went off as the assailants escaped. The Greek Police were notified of the incident and believe that the intruders were in search of explosive defices.
A similar case had occured prior to the Christmas holiday when intruders tried to enter the Corinth base at Loutra tis Oraias Elenis, hoping to gain access to arms.
Mr. Dendias, noting the severity of the attempt to enter barracks, has called for security and surveillance measures to be upgraded at army barracks where arms are kept. The minister has called for an increase to the fortification of army barracks at Corinth and Elia in the Peloponnese as these are routes that terrorists have been known to use in bank heists. Special forces have been called in to reinforce security measures at the base in Corinth.
