This isn’t the first time that the statue of Aphrodite has been used to skewer the Greek economic crisis. In 2011, Germany’s Focus depicted the statue making a distinctly obscene middle-finger gesture with the caption, “A cheat in the euro family”. Legal action was taken at the time, to no avail, against 13 German journalists deemed responsible for the cover.
