Petition: EU signature-gathering drive for Greek debt cut

A million signatures are required so that EU lawmakers are obliged to open up discussion on a Greek debt cut

Newsroom February 7 08:00

The EU’s initiative that allows European citizens to gather a million citizens to ask for a change in EU legislation inspired the creation of an online signature-gathering campaign titled, “People of the World: Say ‘Yes’ to Greek debt cut”.

The signatures number almost 1,500 setting the campaign on its way for the endorsement of its proposal. Once gathered, the million signatures will be presented to European Parliament President Martin Schulz in an effort to sway EU lawmakers to look more favorably on slashing Greek debt.

The petition states:

Greece, a country of the world, the mother of western civilization, the mother of democracy, philosophy, tragic art, Olympic ideals is today a victim of circumstances. Greece suffers the consequences of a non-viable economic experiment which aims to protect private creditors in expense of the greek people. Vital information are hidden from the world. Greece is not to blame for the eurozone economic crisis. This bad blame game must end! It concerns us all. Countries should not be manipulated by bank interests. Help us reach 1.000.000 signatures so we can deliver our petition to the president of the european parliament, Mr. Martin Schulz. Our hope is that Mr. Schulz as an open minded democrat, wil work with great vigour, transparency and visibility towards our aim.
