Leaked HSBC files show bank helped some clients evade taxes; names revealed (List)

The files were obtained through an international investigative journalism collaboration

Newsroom February 9 12:19

The disclosure of leaked HSBC documents revealing how the Swiss branch of the banking multinational facilitated some of its wealthy clients, including several Greek citizens, to conceal millions in assets, has caused global uproar during the last 24 hours.

The banking giant is believe to have set up an international tax evasion system through its Swiss subsidiary, essentially advising well-heeled customers on how to circumvent domestic tax authorities and conceal millions of dollars, euros, pounds, rubles, lira, pesos, francs etc.

The confidential files, obtained through an international media collaboration that included the Guardian, the BBC, the French daily Le Monde, CBS’ 60 Minutes and the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, showed that the bank:

– Regularly allowed customers to withdraw millions, often in foreign, limited circulation currency in Switzerland.

– Used “aggressive” systems to enable wealthy clients to avoid European taxation.

– Colluded with customers to conceal undeclared ‘black’ accounts from domestic tax authorities.
