The Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport is taking part in international Earth Hour from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, by switching off lights at one of its two runways as well as other select parts of the airport, such as staff parking. Earth Hour is a lights-off event that was founded in 2007. Since then, it is held annually in over 162 countries and territories worldwide.

The first Earth Hour took place in Greece in 2009. It met with great success as hundreds of municipalities around Greece took part. Lights switched off at iconic buildings such as Greek Parliament, the White Tower in Thessaloniki and Rio Antirrio bridge. Lights also went off at archeological sites such as the Parthenon.

Businesses also participating in this year’s Earth Hour include Leroy Merlin, Factory Outlet, Sofitel hotel, IKEA, Kotsovolos and others.
