Porto Katsiki, Lefkada’s most famous and breathtaking beach, has it all: turquoise waters, a stunning background with an imposing limestone cliff face and soft white sands.

The dramatic setting of this magical place which lies at the bottom of steep cliff has made it one of the most photographed vistas in Greece. Unfortunately, there’s a downside, as there is increased danger of rock falls, something that has kept this stunning beach closed to the public during the previous holiday season.

A team of experts, led by geology professor Efthymios Lekkas, recently visited Porto Katsiki in order to assess the danger of a landslide and decide whether the popular beach can be reopened to the public.

“We visited Lefkada to establish the degree of risk in Porto Katsiki. Our investigation showed that there is actually some risk, as rocks keep falling on the beach,” Prof. Lekkas noted.

“We have agreed to conduct a thorough risk analysis of the area to see if the beach can be opened to the public this summer season or which measures are required to significantly reduce the risk,” he added.

When asked about the possibility of the beach opening this summer, Lekkas replied that certain “safe areas” will be made available for the public.
