The Ministry of Education on Monday announced the new procedure for university entrance. Greek senior high school students will have less subjects and more choices as well as electives. More tertiary education options will be opened to them as the current system does not allow a student from one strand of the five study streams to choose a vocation from another.
The new system to be implemented in the 2015-2016 school year will be transitional. It allows candidates entry to tertiary education with Panhellenic (university entrance) exams in four subjects, however a fifth elective will also be selected.
The current five thematic areas of study were deemed too specific and will be gathered into three career orientation groups: Humanities, Sciences and Economics/IT. Students will attend 32 hours of classtime/week in their final year, 25 hours/week at vocational schools and night schools.
The reasons for the changes are to give senior high school students more options as to their university entrance and vocational training after school. More changes are expected as the new government is currently in the process of creating a new curricula and books.
