Prison doors may soon open for 1,700-1,950 inmates held in Greek jails thanks to a draft bill that will be voted on in Parliament this week. The bill, drafted by Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos, allows for the home remand and surveillance of inmates using an electronic bracelet.
The elderly, disabled or minors inmates will be amongst the groups who can enter the program, which facilitates house arrest.
The bracelets, attached to the ankle, will solve the problem of overcrowding at Greek prisons, according to the leftist government.
The first prisoners to make use of the bracelets will be placed on a pilot program. Specifically 50 prisoners in northern Greece, 50 minors from the Avlona detention center, 100 people awaiting trial in the greater Athens area and another 50 ill and disabled people will be the first to test the program before it becomes widespread.
All eyes, of course, are on whether notorious “November 17” assassin Savvas Xiros will be amongst those freed, given that the urban terrorist sustained severe injuries when a bomb he was planting exploded prematurely.
