Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis sent a symbolic message to international creditors just a few hours ahead of the crucial May 11 Eurogroup meeting by rehiring the cleaning staff of the Ministry of Finance.
He told journalists that the return of dismissed cleaning staff to their posts at his Ministry was “an act of restoring legal and moral order”. He said that the struggle of this group of women was a symbol of resistance against austerity policies.
The fired cleaning ladies of the Ministry of Finance gripped the nation after they lost their jobs due to EU-sanctioned job cuts aimed at getting the country back on its feet. Now, Varoufakis says that he wants to take the economic burden away from the shoulders of many and place it on the shoulders of those who can handle the weight.
