The new Greek Aspee co-operation – specialized in farming and supplying garlic and onions in the area of Evros northern Greece – consists of 40 farmers. Since 1923 the area of Nea Vyssa is known as the largest garlic producing area in Greece. The group was created to join forces and combat competitive markets such as Spain and China.
The higher prices make it hard for Greece to compete, but the members of the co-operation hope tht their quality and presentation will give them the edge. Investing in quality is the priority of the group that is Global GAP and Agro 2.1 and 2.2 certified. The group have invested in modern machines for packaging and sorting and then temperature-regulated storage facilities so that the same high quality can be delivered around the year.
The group hopes that more farmers wil join in the future so that larger volumes can be sold.
Last year, the group harvested 8,000 metric tons on 70 hectares. Now the focus is on growth and export as the group hopes that investments can pay off.
