The tragic murder of Ani, aged 4, last month shocked public opinion in Greece. Since then, more questions have been raised than answered concerning details of the child’s death whose body the father says he disposed of by cutting into portions, boiling and then throwing out with the trash.
Police investigators went through the 73 Michail Voda Street basement where the child lived during the last few weeks of her life with her Bulgarian father while her mother was away in Germany.
The walls have been checked for fingerprints in an effort to cast light on the case.

The basement flat consists of a bedroom, hall, kitchen, bathroom and living room.

Savvas Bakartzief, the 27-year-old Bulgarian father accused of infanticide, confessed that he had cut up the body of his child in an effort to cover up her death. This has led the police on a quest to search through the basement’s sewage system, pipes and water drains in both the bathroom and kitchen.

An investigation into the kitchen’s exhaust hood took place after the father confessed to boiling the body.

Police sources state that traces of blood were found in the basement flat, including on the ceiling of some of the rooms. A small bone was found in one of the pipes, however the results of the analysis have yet to confirm whether it belongs to the child.

Ani’s presence is marked throughout the flat with stickers on the door, toys and small objects that belonged to the little girl. A photo of the young girl sits on the small table where she passed the time playing and drawing, unaware of the fate that was to befall her.
