Talk about a financial hemorrhaging, Greek banks saw 30 billion euros in deposit walk out their doors between December 2014 and April 2015, a period punctuated by speculation over a new president to avoid a snap election, then the actual election, and, of course, the SYRIZA government’s first months in power.
According to Bank of Greece figures, a whopping 88.9 billion euros in deposits evaporated between October 2009 and September 2012, when the economic crisis turned into a full-blown economic and societal depression.
Between July 2012 and November 2014 saw a rebound with deposit inflows reaching 12.1 billion euros.
The negative trend returned between December 2014 and April 2015, with 29.4 billion euros taken.
