Bloomberg goes to the source of a phenomenon that’s either the cause or the result of the ongoing “Greek crisis”, namely, people taking out whatever cash they have in local bank accounts and stashing it in their homes.
Bloomberg discovered one such person, a pensioner, who tells the US news agency about hiding wads of euros inside closets, bedrooms and even behind heating panels. No names are used and her face is pixelized, of course.
The woman states that each day she takes out 1,000 from the bank and takes it home. Her total savings, she said, are 67,000 euros, all from “many years of hard work” and a decent salary, which she said used to be 2,000 euros a month and was then cut in half.
