Proto Thema poll: Slim SYRIZA lead, eight parties in Parliament

SYRIZA coalition partner, Independent Greeks (AN.EL), shown out of Parliament

Newsroom September 12 10:15

An opinion poll commissioned by Proto Thema, Greece’s best-selling newspaper, shows a razor-thin lead for leftist SYRIZA over conservative New Democracy and eight (!) political parties entering Parliament.

As with previous opinion polls released over the past week, a “derby” appears in hand for the snap Sept. 20 election.

According to the opinion poll, conducted by the well-known Alco firm, SYRIZA shows a 0.7-percentage point lead over rival ND (25.4 to 24.7 percent), followed by Golden Dawn, KKE, PASOK, Potami, the Union of Centrists and the Popular Union. SYRIZA erstwhile right-wing coalition partner, the Independent Greeks (AN.EL), however, are shown not entering Parliament.

SYRIZA and AN.EL, “strange political bedfellows” by most accounts, shared rabid anti-memorandum rhetoric before the Jan. 25 election and after, shortly before negotiating, signing and delivering the third memorandum to Parliament for ratification last month.

Detailed opinion poll figures will be published in the Sept. 13 edition of the newspaper.
