Outspoken conservative New Democracy deputy and former minister Adonis Georgiadis is the third contender for the party’s helm, announcing his candidacy on Monday evening.
Georgiadis is a relative newcomer to ND, arriving from the rightist-populist LA.OS party before it collapsed in the 2012 election. He represents the right-wing of the party.
At the same time, current leader Vangelis Meimarakis, who stood in the recent election even though he assumed the position in a more-or-less caretaker role, remained silent as to whether he’ll also vie for the post.
Earlier, the elected governor of the Central Macedonia Region, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, announced his candidacy for ND’s leadership as well.
The 37-year-old lawmaker follows Kyriakos Mitsotakis, 47, that he will contend for conservative party’s top spot. Mitsotakis is the son of former prime minister Constantine Mitsotakis.
The young, by Greek political world standards, Tzitzikostas collected an impressive 71 percent of the vote in May 2014 in local government elections for the specific region, which encompasses the northern metropolis of Thessaloniki.
