October is traditionally the time for chestnuts around Greece as chestnut vendors begin to make their appearances around the streets of Greece, bringing with them the traditional autumnal smells that Greek childhood memories are made of. Chestnut season is here and there are festivals around the country, none better than the annual Chestnut Festival at the village of Kastanitsa (meaning little chestnut) at Mount Parnonos in the Peloponnese that takes place on Saturday, October 31.

Expect to sample traditional dishes that focus on the use of the chestnut as a recipe. These include everything from pies, traditional spoon sweets and even cakes. The food along with the real Greek feel of a village feast, that includes song, dance and wine just keep people coming back for more every year.

The chestnut festival is in its 32 years and is organized by volunteers of the Kastanitsa Cultural and Naturalist Society with the support of the Peloponnese Region.
