The conflict between Russia and Turkey is escalated after a Russian jet was shot down by Turkey in the Turkey-Syria borders with Russian President Vladimir Putin stating that Russia has being “stabbed in the back” and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying the Russian aircraft violated Turkish airspace.

The Russian Security Council is holding a meeting while there is a serious aggravation of relations between Russia and Turkey and information on the fate of the two Russian pilots of the fighter remaining unclear.

The Russian side interprets the event as a “hostile act”, according to Russian defense ministry, which said that Russia has issued a formal protest to the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

Turkey, though, insists that Turkish authorities had warned many times the two pilots that they violated the airspace of the country, but, they did not obey.

This event has caused deep concern in European Union and US.

However, US President Barack Obama during the joint press conference held with French President Francois Hollande backed Turkey.

Mr. Obama said he continued to gather information about the shooting down of the Russian aircraft and he was expected to talk with President Erdogan, stressing, though, that it is Turkey’s right to protect its borders.

Furthermore, a few hours later after the extraordinary meeting of NATO requested by Turkey, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Russian fighter violated Turkish airspace.
