The majority of Hamburg’s residents voted against hosting the 2024 Olympic Games, according to the results of the referendum which took place on Sunday 29th on whether Hamburg should bid for the Olympic Games in 2024.
According to the final results, 51.6% of those participated in the referendum were against hosting the Olympics, with voting participation reaching 50.1%.
“Hamburg will not bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024,” Hamburg mayor Olaf Scholz said adding “The senate and I would have preferred a different decision, but it is a clear one”.
This is the second time that Germans deny via referendum the organization of Olympic Games, following Munich’s residents who said ‘no’ to 2022 Winter Olympic Games, while Berlin had seemed reluctant to bid for 2024 Olympic Games.
The reason seems to be the high cost required for the organization of Olympic Games with those who were against arguing that hosting the 33rd Olympic Games would cost the city too much in public funds.
