There’s a village in Bulgaria with a large Roma minority group that reportedly sells babies to Greece, according to a revealing reportage by daily newspaper Ethnos. “I still remember when they came from the neighborhood and asked for the baby I had in my womb,” says one woman, aged 30.

Stanka, the woman in question, told Ethnos newspaper that she sold her baby for 3,500 euros. “I constantly regret this decision and I can’t stop thinking of the boy, but I was young and silly,” says the mother of two who is now standing trial for this act.

She says that she isn’t the only one to have sold a child. It is commonplace for people to sell their babies when they run out of money.  She is just one of dozens of women who sell their babies to couples who can’t have children, say officials.

It is suspected that the number of babies sold in this way numbers hundreds with mothers earning everything from 1,000 euros to 5,000 euros for the transaction according to the Balkan Investgative Reporting Network (BIRN).
