Greek farmers are hardening their stand against planned social security reforms for the agriculture sector being tabled by the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government. Day-by-day there is an increase in blocked roads. Farmers are co-ordinating efforts with intermittent closure of roads ahead of the discussion to take palce in Greek Parliament on Tuesday when Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and main opposition conservative New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis outline their view on social security.
Farmers are opposed to measures in a bill that is part of an agreement between the government and creditors. Financial assistance to Greece depends on the measures, however farmers are protesting the reforms with road blocks around the country.
On Monday, there will be two-hour closures from noon to 2 p.m. and intermittent blocks through to 7 p.m.
